From the time of Mozart’s death in 1791 until 1850 the guitar became a highly popular instrument in central Europe. The is the period of the romantic guitar, which coincided with the time where Ludvig van Beethoven (1770–1827) and Franz Schubert (1797–1828) lived and worked in Vienna.
The arrangement of Mozart’s Andante KV. 616 presented here aims to transcribe his music in the spirit of the historical work of for example Ferdinando Carulli and Mauro Giuliani: it is my attempt to show how the guitarist-composers of the Classical period might have adopted this music for the guitar.
When performed as a guitar duo the Andante KV 616 may regain the intimate timbre similar to what Mozart himself might have heard when playing the piece on a contemporary fortepiano. In that sense – with regard to actual sound – the present arrangement is thus truly authentic.
