Many Christians around the world, with or without realising it, owe a great deal to the evangelical revival of the eighteenth century. Hymn singing was a vital part of the movement. Through his translations from German, John Wesley was the first author of these hymns and to read or better still to sing them is to be in touch with the theology and experience of the movement.
John M. Haley has had a lifelong enthusiasm for the hymns of the Wesleys. From childhood he learned many hymns by heart, from the Sunday services conducted by his father, the hymns his mother sang around the family home, and from his playing hymns at the piano. He learned John Wesley’s great hymn ‘Now I have found the ground’ from a record belonging to his parents. These hymns helped shape his developing faith. As a Law student in Leicester, he shared this faith with his friends and took them to a church that used John Wesley’s translations of Zinzendorf and others, as well as the hymns of Charles Wesley. John Haley trained for the Methodist ministry at Wesley College, Bristol, and has served six Methodist circuits, in London, Wales, Scotland, Cornwall and Devon. During this time he has continued to study with Westminster College, Oxford, and the
University of Wales.
