The piece is in the key of f minor and is based on the devr-i hindi usul, a 7 /8 rhythmic pattern grouped as (3+2+2). While the key of the piece is not based on one of the unique scales Turkish makams use, the rhythmic structure is undoubtedly characteristic of Turkish music.
The piece features a theme which functions as a ritornello, or teslim as it is referred to in Turkish music, which alternates with several hane, namely movements or parts where new ideas are introduced. I attempted to match the relentless character of this usul with running melodies and at the same time to maintain the symbolism throughout the piece.
