Hasan Uçarsu (b. 1965) is a leading Turkish composer who tries to establish an understanding in his music that encompasses the sounds, sensitivities and values of the geography in which he lives, extending his reach from the distant past to present times. Of this piece he writes: “The piece consists of two interconnected movements; the first is slow, and the second fast. The initial movement conveys a sense of timelessness, frozen within a stagnant environment, enhanced with fleeting motions and subtle glimmers, as if the night would never end. However, this sonic realm is abruptly shattered by an unexpected surge of intensity and fear, seamlessly transitioning into the second movement. When the momentum generated by this great upheaval gradually wanes, yielding to the stillness of the first movement, the music draws to a close.”

blue moon grey, yellow night wall was composed over the course of a few weeks during which a major earthquake affected the Marmara region of Türkiye. A powerfully evocative piece, full of imagery and sounds, it has become one of the most performed pieces by a Turkish composer to date.
