Turkish Tunes wishes to introduce harpists to tunes that are well known in Turkey. Compiled and edited with a pedagogical mindset, they are drawn from a pool of folksongs, songs, dance tunes, instrumental tunes, hymns and marches that feature not only the elements of Turkish music, namely makam and usul but also local musical characteristics from different parts of the country.
Each tune is given in three versions:
• melody
• melody with an easy accompaniment
• melody with an intermediate accompaniment and some embellishments
The tunes chosen for this book are categorized by their makam. Makam is the Turkish music system by which melodies are created, shaped by colorful scales and inherent motivic characteristics. Eight makams are featured in this book, with each makam featuring two tunes that can be played one after the other or alone. Furthermore, the tunes feature a wealth of rhythmic patterns, a structure called usul.
Eight usuls are introduced in the book.
