Lucky Charms is a collection of twenty-one short piano pieces. Exploring a whole variety of different moods and styles, they were written over a period of several years; some pieces have been previously featured in Pianist Magazine whilst others were composed especially for this publication.
These miniature works, of which none are longer than 24 bars, might be considered around elementary level, ranging from pre-Grade 1 to approximately Grade 2 level of the various British examination board piano syllabuses.
A variety of techniques have been included making this a useful collection for studying and implementing a myriad of musical skills, encouraging both technical and musical development. Spirited upbeat numbers such as The Laughing Lobster, Motor Cycle Stomp, Triad Tease, and Puppet’s Parade, demand clean, clear finger work, rhythmic precision, and an exuberant joie de vivre. These are complimented by a selection of more reflective, expressive, atmospheric works, such as A Solitary Tale, Forget-Me-Not, In a Daze and Iberian Mist, all of which would benefit from softer colours, plenty of sustaining pedal, as well as judicious use of rubato.
